Feeling overwhelmed with grief or loss in Mississauga and Toronto?
Grief is a natural and healthy reaction to loss and everyone processes their feelings differently…there is no “right” way to grieve or “normal” way to express these sometimes intense emotions. Some people choose to grieve in private, while others seek out social support. People of different cultures have different ways of expressing bereavement and honouring the loss of loved ones. It is a very personal process and you deserve to have your experience and your feelings respected during this extremely difficult time.
What if I cannot escape the overwhelming grief and sadness?
Although grief and bereavement is individual, culturally defined, and a natural process, some people may find the loss too much to bear. They may become stuck in the feelings of sadness, depression, or anger that commonly accompany the grieving process, so that it is no longer a process but an ever-present dark cloud of despair hanging over their heads. Every little thing may remind them of the loss, and they may cling to the memory of the person or thing they have lost without fully coming to terms with and accepting that the person or thing is gone from their lives. Even if they have accepted the loss, some people may need help dealing with residual emotions, especially if the loss was sudden, as in an accident or suicide, or if they had “unfinished business” with the person who died. An unhealthy reaction would be to deny or avoid the feelings for too long. In order to move forward in your life, eventually, in your own time, you will need to go through the stages of the grieving process in some way, and a skilled, compassionate therapist can help you through this if you’re finding it difficult to handle on your own.
