Understanding Chronic Pain

What Is Chronic Pain?

Chronic pain is pain that persists beyond normal healing time — usually three months or more. It may follow an injury, surgery, or illness, or arrive with no clear cause at all. Conditions like fibromyalgia, arthritis, migraine, back pain, and neuropathic pain all fall under this umbrella.

Over time the nervous system can become more sensitised, amplifying pain signals — which is why pain can persist long after tissue has healed. This is a real, physical process. Psychological therapy doesn't treat pain as imaginary; it targets that nervous-system sensitisation and the exhausting cycle of pain, stress, poor sleep, and reduced activity.

  • What chronic pain affects: sleep, energy, mood, concentration, work capacity, intimacy, independence, and relationships
  • The cycle it creates: pain leads to stress and poor sleep, which lowers pain tolerance, which reduces activity, which increases pain and low mood
How Therapy Helps

How Pain Therapy Supports Your Life

Chronic pain therapy doesn't promise a cure. It reduces the grip pain has on your life — improving sleep, mood, and function, and often lowering the intensity of the pain itself.

Better Sleep

Break the pain–insomnia cycle that worsens both.

Lower Stress Response

Calm the nervous system that amplifies pain signals.

More Activity

Return to movement safely using pacing, not push-and-crash.

Improved Mood

Address the depression and anxiety pain brings with it.

Chronic Pain Therapy

Less suffering, better function, more of your life back.

Less Isolation

Feel understood and believed, often for the first time.

Regained Control

Make decisions led by your values, not by the pain.

Pain After an Accident or Workplace Injury?

If your pain followed a motor vehicle accident, a workplace injury, or has led to a disability claim, we provide psychological assessments for SABS, WSIB, and long-term disability — including functional capacity and return-to-work evaluations.

These assessments are often covered by insurance at no direct cost to you, and we handle direct billing with insurers where possible. Our intake team can walk you through what applies to your situation.

When To Seek Support

Is Chronic Pain Therapy Right For Me?

If pain has been shrinking your life — your sleep, your mood, your work, your relationships — psychological support can help even when the pain itself remains.

Pain Over 3 Months

Pain that has outlasted expected healing time.

Poor Sleep

Pain wakes you, and bad nights make pain worse.

Low Mood

Depression or hopelessness alongside the pain.

Fear of Movement

Avoiding activity in case it triggers a flare.

Push and Crash

Overdoing it on good days, paying for it for days after.

Feeling Disbelieved

Being told it's stress, or all in your head.

Shrinking Life

Fewer activities, less work, less socialising.

Strained Relationships

Loved ones don't understand what you're managing.

FAQs

Chronic Pain Questions, Answered

How can I start counselling right away?+

Call our Intake Department at (416) 485-5555 ext. 1 — an intake counsellor will ask a few questions and connect you with a therapist right away. Or fill out the web form on our site and our intake team will follow up by phone or email.

Does therapy mean you think my pain is imaginary?+

Absolutely not. Chronic pain is a real physical condition involving nervous-system sensitisation. Psychological therapy is recommended in pain care because it targets the stress, sleep, and activity cycles that amplify pain — not because the pain is invented.

Can therapy actually reduce my pain, or just help me cope?+

Both are possible. Many clients experience genuine reductions in pain intensity as the nervous system becomes less sensitised and sleep improves. Even where pain levels stay similar, the suffering and disruption it causes typically drop substantially.

What conditions do you work with?+

Fibromyalgia, chronic back and neck pain, arthritis, migraine, endometriosis, IBS, neuropathic pain, and persistent pain following injury or surgery — alongside your medical care, never instead of it.

Do you work with my doctor or specialist?+

We work alongside your medical team. With your consent we can coordinate with your physician or specialist so psychological and medical care support each other.

Is this covered if my pain came from a car accident or workplace injury?+

Often yes. Psychological assessment and treatment after a motor vehicle accident (SABS) or workplace injury (WSIB) is frequently covered at no direct cost to you, and we handle direct insurer billing where possible.

Can naturopathic care help with chronic pain?+

It can support the physical side — inflammation, nutrition, sleep, and energy. Our naturopathic doctors work as part of an integrative plan alongside your medical treatment, not as a replacement for it.

Do you offer online chronic pain therapy in Ontario?+

Yes. We provide virtual sessions anywhere in Ontario — including Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, London, Kitchener, and Windsor — which many clients prefer when travelling worsens their pain.

Is chronic pain therapy covered by insurance?+

Most extended health plans cover registered psychotherapists and psychologists, and many cover naturopathic care. We provide receipts you can submit to your insurer — see our fees and insurance page for details.
