Understanding Trauma

What Is Trauma?

Trauma is what happens inside you after an overwhelming experience — an accident, an assault, a medical emergency, a sudden loss, or years spent in an unsafe environment. Your nervous system learned to protect you, and it hasn't yet registered that the danger has passed.

That's why trauma isn't weakness, and it isn't something you should simply be over by now. It's a physiological response held in the body and brain — and it responds very well to treatment. Trauma therapy helps you process what happened at a pace you control, so the memory loses its grip on your present.

  • Signs of unresolved trauma: flashbacks or intrusive memories, nightmares, feeling constantly on edge, avoiding reminders, emotional numbness, difficulty trusting people
  • How it shows up day to day: trouble sleeping, startling easily, irritability, difficulty concentrating, relationship strain, using distraction or substances to cope
How Therapy Helps

How Trauma Therapy Supports Your Healing

Trauma therapy helps you feel safe in your own body again. Our therapists work at your pace, building stability and coping skills before processing anything difficult.

A Calmer Nervous System

Fewer triggers, less hypervigilance, more ease.

Better Sleep

Reduce nightmares and restless, broken nights.

Freedom From Avoidance

Reclaim the places and people you've been avoiding.

Emotional Regulation

Feel emotions without being flooded by them.

Trauma Therapy

Safety, processing, and recovery at your own pace.

Restored Trust

Rebuild safety and closeness in relationships.

A Life Beyond It

The memory stays; the grip it has on you doesn't.

Types of Trauma

How Trauma Shows Up

Trauma takes different forms, and the right PTSD treatment depends on which pattern fits your experience.

Single Event

Acute Trauma & PTSD

Following one overwhelming event — a car accident, assault, medical emergency, or sudden loss.

  • Flashbacks & intrusive memories
  • Nightmares & disrupted sleep
  • Avoiding reminders of the event
Ongoing

Complex Trauma

From repeated or prolonged experiences, often beginning in childhood — neglect, abuse, or an unsafe home.

  • Difficulty trusting others
  • Deep shame or a harsh inner critic
  • Emotional overwhelm or numbness
Work & Care

Vicarious & Occupational Trauma

From exposure through your work — first responders, healthcare, social services — or from caring for someone who is suffering.

  • Compassion fatigue & burnout
  • Intrusive images from work
  • Emotional distance from loved ones
Our Approach

How Trauma Therapy Works

You will never be pushed to relive anything before you're ready. Our trauma therapists follow a phased approach — stability first, then processing, then rebuilding — using treatments with strong evidence behind them.

Trauma-Focused CBT & EMDR

Evidence-based treatments that help the brain reprocess traumatic memories, so they can be recalled without the same distress. EMDR is recommended internationally as a first-line PTSD treatment.

Assessment & Clarity

Not Sure If It's PTSD?

Trauma symptoms overlap heavily with anxiety, depression, and burnout — and many people live for years without realising trauma is what's driving them. Our comprehensive psychological assessments give you clarity before treatment begins.

We also provide med-legal psychological assessments after a motor vehicle accident (SABS), workplace injury (WSIB), or for long-term disability claims — these are often covered by insurance at no direct cost to you.

When To Seek Support

Is Trauma Therapy Right For Me?

You don't need a diagnosis, and your experience doesn't need to be “bad enough.” If something still affects you, that is reason enough to get support.

Flashbacks

Memories that arrive uninvited and feel present-tense.

Nightmares

Disrupted sleep, or dreading going to bed at all.

Always On Alert

Scanning for danger, startling easily, never fully relaxed.

Avoidance

Steering around places, people, or conversations.

Numbness

Feeling flat, detached, or disconnected from yourself.

Trust Difficulties

Closeness feels unsafe, even with people who care.

Irritability

A short fuse that doesn't match the situation.

Shame & Self-Blame

Believing it was somehow your fault.

FAQs

Trauma & PTSD Questions, Answered

How can I start counselling right away?+

Call our Intake Department at (416) 485-5555 ext. 1 — an intake counsellor will ask a few questions and connect you with a therapist right away. Or fill out the web form on our site and our intake team will follow up by phone or email.

Will I have to talk about what happened in detail?+

Not until you're ready, and never before you have the skills to stay grounded. Trauma therapy follows a phased approach: safety and stabilisation first, processing second. You control the pace throughout.

What is EMDR and how does it work?+

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) uses bilateral stimulation while you briefly recall a memory, helping the brain reprocess it so it can be remembered without the same emotional charge. It is recommended internationally as a first-line PTSD treatment.

How long does trauma therapy take?+

It depends on the type of trauma. Single-event PTSD often improves within 8–16 sessions, while complex or childhood trauma usually takes longer. Your therapist reviews progress with you regularly so you always know where you stand.

Do I need a PTSD diagnosis to get help?+

No. Many clients have trauma symptoms that affect daily life without meeting the full criteria for PTSD, and trauma therapy helps either way.

Do you work with children and teens who have experienced trauma?+

Yes — we provide trauma therapy for children, adolescents, and adults, with parent guidance included for younger clients.

Do you offer online trauma therapy in Ontario?+

Yes. We provide virtual trauma counselling anywhere in Ontario — including Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, London, Kitchener, and Windsor. Many trauma treatments, including EMDR, can be delivered effectively online.

Can therapy help with trauma from a car accident or workplace injury?+

Yes. We provide both therapy and med-legal psychological assessments for motor vehicle accidents (SABS) and workplace injuries (WSIB), which are often covered by insurance at no direct cost to you.

Is trauma therapy covered by insurance?+

Most extended health plans cover registered psychotherapists and psychologists. We provide receipts you can submit to your insurer — see our fees and insurance page for details.
