Understanding ADHD

What Is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects focus, impulse control, and activity levels. It's one of the most common conditions diagnosed in childhood — and for many adults, ADHD continues well into adulthood, often going unrecognized for years. In fact, many women are only now finding out they have ADHD.

ADHD isn't a lack of willpower or discipline. It's a difference in how the brain manages attention, motivation, and self-regulation, and effective treatment means addressing the underlying causes, not just the symptoms. While there is no cure, ADHD is highly manageable — and ADHD therapy is one of the most effective, medication-free ways to build the skills and structure that make daily life work.

  • Signs of adult ADHD: procrastination, missed deadlines, forgetfulness, restlessness, emotional reactivity, trouble with time and money
  • Signs of ADHD in children & teens: trouble sitting still, easily distracted at school, interrupting or acting impulsively, struggles with routines

The Three Presentations

How ADHD Shows Up

ADHD generally presents in one of three ways. Understanding which pattern fits you — or your child — shapes the right ADHD treatment plan. Read more about the types of ADHD presentations.

Often Overlooked

Inattentive

Attention drifts, details slip, and starting feels harder than it should — even when you care deeply about the task.

  • Difficulty focusing & staying organized
  • Loses track of tasks, time & belongings
  • Struggles to follow through on plans
Easiest to Spot

Hyperactive-Impulsive

The body and mind run fast — restlessness, quick reactions, and decisions made before the thinking catches up.

  • Restless, fidgety, always "on the go"
  • Interrupts or acts before thinking
  • Finds waiting & sitting still difficult
Most Common

Combined

Features of both patterns show up together — the most frequent presentation in both children and adults.

  • Inattention & distractibility
  • Hyperactivity & impulsivity
  • Symptoms shift with age & setting
Our Approach

How ADHD Therapy Works

ADHD therapy focuses on the real-world skills medication can't teach — managing time, organizing tasks, regulating emotions, and changing the negative self-talk that builds up after years of struggling. Our ADHD therapists take a root-cause, whole-person approach to ADHD treatment.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT for ADHD helps you build practical systems for planning, prioritizing, and following through — while challenging the "I always mess this up" thinking patterns that hold you back.

Structure, Routines & Parent Support

Behavioural therapy strategies tailored to how your brain actually works — for adults managing careers, and for parents supporting a child with ADHD at home and school.

Emotional Regulation Skills

ADHD often comes with intense emotions, rejection sensitivity, anxiety, or low self-esteem. Therapy builds the tools to respond rather than react.

ADHD Testing & Assessment

Not Sure If It's ADHD?

Adult ADHD often overlaps with anxiety, depression, burnout, and sleep issues — sometimes ADHD and anxiety are hard to tell apart. That's why an accurate picture matters before ADHD treatment begins. Our team offers comprehensive ADHD assessments in Ontario, including a diagnostic interview, standardized rating scales, and input from the people who know you best.

Because we're an integrative clinic, assessment can also include input from our naturopathic doctors to rule out physical contributors like sleep, nutrition, and hormonal factors. Curious how long it takes? See our ADHD assessment timeline in Ontario.

FAQs

ADHD Therapy Questions, Answered

How can I start counselling right away?+

There are two ways to reach us. Call our Intake Department at (416) 485-5555 ext. 1 — an intake counsellor will ask a few questions and connect you with an ADHD therapist right away. Or fill out the web form on our site, and our intake team will follow up by phone or email to answer your questions.

Does therapy for ADHD work without medication?+

Yes. Cognitive behavioural therapy and behavioural strategies are well-researched, effective approaches for managing ADHD symptoms. Many of our clients manage ADHD through therapy alone; others combine therapy with medication prescribed by their physician. We'll help you build a plan that fits your goals.

What if it's not ADHD?+

ADHD in adults often occurs alongside anxiety, depression, and other concerns — and sometimes those conditions explain the symptoms better than ADHD does. That's why we evaluate the whole person, and why comprehensive assessments, including input from our naturopathic doctors, are part of our root-cause approach to care.

What does an ADHD assessment involve?+

Assessment begins with a thorough diagnostic interview, gathering information from you and, where helpful, from family members or partners. Your clinician then moves to standardized testing — DSM-5 symptom review and behaviour rating scales — plus any additional clinical measures they recommend. If underlying learning or cognitive concerns are suspected, psychoeducational or intelligence testing may be added.

What happens after the assessment?+

You'll sit down with your clinician to review a comprehensive written report and treatment plan. It summarizes everything gathered during the process and lays out practical next steps — behaviour strategies, tools, and routines designed to create structure, predictability, and better outcomes at home, school, or work.

Do you see children and teens for ADHD?+

Yes — we provide ADHD therapy for children, adolescents, and adults. For younger clients, therapy often includes parent coaching and school-related strategies alongside individual sessions through our children & youth services.

Is ADHD therapy covered by insurance?+

Most extended health plans cover services from registered psychotherapists and psychologists. We provide receipts you can submit to your insurer — see our fees and insurance page for details, and our intake team can help you understand your options.

Do you offer online ADHD therapy in Ontario?+

Yes. We provide virtual ADHD counselling to clients anywhere in Ontario — including Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, London, Kitchener, and Windsor. Online ADHD therapy works well for skills-based work like planning, time management, and routines.

Do you do ADHD testing for adults in Canada?+

Yes. We provide comprehensive adult ADHD assessments and ADHD testing at our Ontario clinics and virtually across the province, including diagnostic interviews, standardized rating scales, and a written report with treatment recommendations.
