Understanding Anxiety

What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is your body's built-in alarm system — helpful in real danger, exhausting when it won't switch off. When anxiety symptoms become constant, physical, and hard to control, they can interfere with sleep, work, relationships, and health.

Anxiety is also highly treatable. Anxiety therapy helps you understand your triggers and the underlying causes that contribute to anxiety, calm your nervous system, and change the negative thought patterns that keep worry running — so anxiety stops making your decisions for you.

  • Emotional signs: constant worry, dread, irritability, racing thoughts, difficulty concentrating, fear of losing control
  • Physical signs: tight chest, racing heart, muscle tension, stomach issues, restlessness, trouble sleeping

Getting Clarity

Not Sure What's Driving Your Anxiety?

Anxiety often travels with other concerns — ADHD, depression, burnout, and sleep issues can all look and feel similar. An accurate picture matters before treatment begins, which is why we offer comprehensive psychological assessments alongside therapy.

Because we're an integrative clinic, our naturopathic doctors can also help rule out physical contributors like thyroid, hormonal, sleep, and nutrition factors that mimic or worsen anxiety.

When To Seek Support

Is Anxiety Therapy Right For Me?

You don't need to be in crisis to start. Many clients begin anxiety therapy when life is manageable — but worry keeps taking up more space than it should.

Constant Worry

Your mind runs worst-case scenarios on repeat.

Sleep Trouble

Racing thoughts keep you up or wake you early.

Physical Symptoms

Tight chest, racing heart, tension, stomach knots.

Avoidance

Skipping events, calls, or places to dodge the fear.

Panic Attacks

Sudden waves of fear that feel overwhelming.

Overthinking Decisions

Small choices feel heavy; big ones feel impossible.

Work Stress

Perfectionism, dread, and burnout building at work.

Irritability

Snapping at loved ones, then feeling guilty after.

FAQs

Anxiety Therapy Questions, Answered

How can I start counselling right away?+

There are two ways to reach us. Call our Intake Department at (416) 485-5555 ext. 1 — an intake counsellor will ask a few questions and connect you with a therapist right away. Or fill out the web form on our site, and our intake team will follow up by phone or email.

How do you treat anxiety?+

We use evidence-based approaches — primarily cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), alongside mindfulness training, nervous-system regulation skills, and gradual exposure. Your therapist builds an individualized plan around your specific form of anxiety and your goals.

How long does it take to treat anxiety?+

It varies by person and severity. Many clients notice meaningful relief within 8–12 sessions of CBT, while long-standing anxiety may take longer. Your therapist will review progress with you regularly so you always know where things stand.

Can anxiety be treated without medication?+

Yes. CBT and related therapies are highly effective for anxiety on their own, and many of our clients manage anxiety through therapy alone. Others combine therapy with medication prescribed by their physician — we support whichever path fits your goals.

What if my anxiety is actually something else?+

Anxiety often overlaps with ADHD, depression, and physical health factors. We evaluate the whole person, and our integrative team — including naturopathic doctors — can help rule out contributors like thyroid, hormonal, and sleep issues.

Do you help children and teens with anxiety?+

Yes — we provide anxiety therapy for children, adolescents, and adults. For younger clients, therapy often includes parent guidance and school-related strategies alongside individual sessions.

Is anxiety therapy covered by insurance?+

Most extended health plans cover services from registered psychotherapists and psychologists. We provide receipts you can submit to your insurer — see our fees and insurance page for details.

Do you offer online anxiety therapy in Ontario?+

Yes. We provide virtual anxiety counselling to clients anywhere in Ontario — including Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, London, Kitchener, and Windsor. Online therapy for anxiety is just as effective as in-person for most people, and it removes travel as a barrier.

What types of anxiety disorders do you treat?+

Our therapists treat generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, panic disorder and panic attacks, phobias, health anxiety, and performance anxiety, as well as anxiety that occurs alongside depression, ADHD, or chronic stress.
